The LEADER trial and cardiovascular endpoints

LEADER compared liraglutide with placebo in people with type 2 diabetes at high cardiovascular risk.

ThePepBlog Research Edition · Educational summary · Prepared September 20, 2026

What the research examined

LEADER compared liraglutide with placebo in people with type 2 diabetes at high cardiovascular risk. The trial reported a lower rate of its primary composite cardiovascular outcome. Gastrointestinal events were among the reasons participants discontinued the study medicine.

How to interpret the findings

A composite combines different events; its result does not mean every individual component showed the same effect. The findings concern a defined medicine and high-risk population and should not be generalized to every peptide or GLP-1-related compound.
