What the research examined
Experiments in isolated rat muscle investigated how AICAR-related AMPK activation affected fatty-acid and glucose oxidation. A separate study used muscle cells and genetically modified mice to investigate how AMPK interacts with PGC-1α, a regulator of mitochondrial gene expression.
How to interpret the findings
These experiments address signaling and metabolism in defined models. They do not establish interchangeable effects between AICAR and other compounds associated with AMPK, including MOTS-c, or predict an exercise outcome in people.
