GLP-1 research in inflammatory bowel disease

Observational studies have examined GLP-1 medicines in people with inflammatory bowel disease.

ThePepBlog Research Edition · Educational summary · Prepared September 20, 2026

What the research examined

Observational studies have examined GLP-1 medicines in people with inflammatory bowel disease. A retrospective semaglutide study reported weight-related outcomes and selected disease events. A separate target-trial emulation examined whether adding semaglutide or tirzepatide was associated with improved outcomes in stable inflammatory bowel disease; it did not demonstrate that proposed benefit.

How to interpret the findings

These analyses use clinical records rather than randomized assignment. Treatment selection, incomplete records, and discontinuation can influence comparisons. Findings about weight or selected adverse events should not be recast as evidence that a medicine treats inflammatory bowel disease.
