What the research examined

A receptor-cloning study identified a target for growth hormone secretagogues in pituitary and hypothalamic tissue. Subsequent research identified ghrelin, an endogenous acylated peptide associated with that receptor. Together, the publications helped define a distinct endocrine-signaling system.

How to interpret the findings

Discovering a receptor and its endogenous ligand establishes molecular biology. It does not validate every synthetic molecule that interacts with the same pathway.
